Gasherbrum II
Gasherbrum II (13th Highest in the World)
Climbing Period: June to August
Altitude GII: 26,360ft / 8035m
Route: GII - South West Ridge Route (Normal Route).
From Base Camp at 5150m (16,897ft), climbers ascend
an icefall, and climb toward Camp 1, 5950m (19,521ft)
through a heavily crevassed snowfield. Climbers
will use Camp 1 as their Advance Base Camp. From
Camp 1, climbers ascend to Camp 2, situated upon the South
West Ridge at 6500m (21,326ft). Climbers
will continue to move up the route toward Camp 3 at
6950m (22,802ft). It is possible to summit from
Camp 3, however a Camp 4, at 7350m (24,115ft), may also
be established on an as needed basis. From the final
camp, climbers will ascend the ridge and move under the
peak, on the summit slope. This slope is prone
to avalanche, so climbers must be aware of snow conditions
before proceeding. The final summit ridge is narrow
and exposed.
Meagan attempted to climb GII in June/July 2005. Due
to an abnormal monsoon season, the conditions were not in
her favour during the summit attempt. Meagan and her
climbing partners had to abort their summit attempt due
to extreme avalanche danger on the summit slope.
Meagan is very familiar with the
route.
